Given its evolution at break neck speed, it's rather difficult to keep up. Today we're here to unravel a term that has garnered a lot of attention in recent times. Well, we're talking about `Enterprise Software'. Simply put, the basic objective of enterprise software is to empower the activities of large organizations, supporting a wide range of user roles.

Let's begin by defining the term, followed by, how enterprise software differs from other types of software:

Enterprise Software Fundamentals

Let's begin by building some fundamental knowledge: Enterprise software, also called as enterprise application software (EAS), is a computer software used to fulfill the requirements of an entire organization rather than an individual user. The term organization includes businesses, educational institutes, hotels & restaurants, charities & non-profits as well as government offices. Since enterprises are typically large organizations, enterprise software must be `large software' by definition. Here, it means large-scale i.e. software that supports and upholds a large number of users and user roles, supporting many if not most of the goals of the enterprise.

What Are The Typical Types Of Enterprise Software?

Briefly understanding some of the most common examples of enterprise software. Since the objective of this kind of software is to support the various activities of large organizations, the below list should come as no surprise:

· Human Resource Management Including Payroll, Compensation & Benefits

Large organizations are likely to have more employees and an HR Division to deal with hiring, promotion, separation, retirement, attendance & leave, goal setting, performance appraisal and such. Depending on the location of the enterprise, it might be subject to multiple labor laws. Failure to comply with such laws might result in severe financial and legal consequences. Hence, having a specialized software to help HR in delivering their services is hygiene for all sorts of enterprises.

· Customer Support

An enterprise will, ideally, have a large and growing set of customers, who will constantly require assistance to tackle and resolve their day-to-day requirements. That is the reason most enterprises will have some kind of customer care center for answering customers' requests, either by telephone, email, or live chat. Software that empowers customer support is crucial in two ways. The first and obvious one is that it permits customer support staff to do their basic job of assisting customers. The second one is about the manner in which the software assists in monitoring, measuring and improving the internal processes through use of metrics. By monitoring indicators, such as average time taken to resolve the issue, total time spent on each query or total issues registered each day, organizations can have a clear perspective on how well they're doing on the customer experience and, ideally, utilize that information to good use.

· Email Marketing System

In order to not only survive but thrive, organizations need to continuously acquire new customers while simultaneously maintaining a solid, healthy and durable relationships with existing ones. Some tools are very effective to handle this job, such as a good old email, since it's the de facto standard of communication of the enterprise business.

"Since enterprises are typically large organizations, enterprise software must be `large software' by definition"

· Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)

Here we have the most `enterprisey' of all enterprise applications: the multibillion dollar industry, called Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software. ERP is more like a process. Its goal is to accomplish the integrated management of the principal business processes in an organization. Frequently, companies make use of technology to execute such a process, and that's where ERP systems prove to be handy.

Taking Enterprise Software to the Next Level

`Enterprise'-and the `enterprise software'-has gained some degree of pejorative connotation over the years. People would frequently perceive enterprises as being slow, bureaucratic, and stagnant. Enterprise software, likewise, was often considered bloated, slow, and hard to use, especially when compared to the stylish apps of new-age startups. However, things have changed. Nowadays, enterprise customers expect their software to be at par with consumer software. How do you go about that? How do you take your enterprise software process up and notch and delight customers?

The answer lies in the process. If enterprise software is to be as good as the best consumer applications available, it needs to embrace modern development techniques and tools. This involves leveraging automation to the maximum possible extent, creating automated testing and release management strategies, and embracing DevOps and Agile.

So, if you are looking to take your enterprise to the next level, build a digital muscle and adopt the right enterprise software to help you get there.
